Growing up in a south side suburb of Richmond Virginia Nathan began playing music in the 5th grade with piano lessons. The following year he was enrolled in his middle school band program and picked the tenor saxophone as his instrument. Music quickly became a central feature in Nathan’s life as it helped him develop mentally, emotionally, and socially. In the following years he was able to find success playing music and was able to translate some of that success to other aspects of his life.
In high school he joined local area band Zero One and began his career as a performer. Zero One played music ranging from garage rock to frothy funk and Nathan was given a taste of what it feels like to perform on stage in front of people. Soon after Nathan also joined local punk-ska powerhouse Murphy’s Kids and began to travel the east coast spreading his brand of rock infused saxophone playing.
After high school Nathan enrolled at Longwood University where he studied under Dr. Charles Kinzer and began to really hone his tone. A short hiatus from Murphy’s Kids brought with it time to practice and learn about jazz and other styles of saxophone playing. While at Longwood Nathan quickly rose through the ranks of intrumentalist to become the first chair in the Longwood Jazz Enseble A where he was voted most improved player his first semester and most valuable player the all the following semesters, and was able to help foster the Longwood Jazz Combo program. Also while at Longwood Nathan helped form and perfrom/write and arrange for the Legrande Jazz Ensemble which appeared every Tuesday at a local club and was hired for weddings, parties, and other gatherings. Eventually he joined back up with Murphy’s Kids and continued to tour the east coast.
After college Nathan moved home to Richmond VA and landed a job as a woodwind instructor at Harrison’s Music located in the west end of the city. While teaching he, along with fellow Murphy’s Kids members, started a funk fusion group called Aquafuture which performed frequently in the city and in other central Virginia locations. Since then Murphy’s Kids has kept Nathan very busy releasing 2 full length albums and touring the east coast frequently and sharing the stage with national acts like Reel Big Fish, The Slackers, The Pietasters, and The Skatilites.
You can still find Nathan teaching and performing in Richmond VA. Most recently he toured the east coast, midwest, and Canada as a saxophone sub for D.C. area ska band Eastern Standard Time. Murphy’s Kids is still active and he is currently working on new music for Aquafuture.
